With wired high-speed Internet access firmly entrenched and rapidly growing, the next big step for the broadband sector is wireless and mobile high-speed Internet access. Phone companies, cable operators, consumer electronics makers and tech suppliers are racing to figure out how to make the transition from wired to wireless and ultimately mobile wireless broadband Internet access.
But, which wireless technologies will catch fire and which ones will fizzle? Is wireless high-speed Internet access a substitution for wired connectivity or are the two technologies complementary? Is wireless access a critical component of any enterprise or residential broadband service package? Are there viable business models that make wireless broadband profitable in the residential market?
The Communications Media Advisory Group's top communications analyst Cynthia Brumfield questioned leaders of this new wave of broadband development, including Intel Vice President and Wireless NetworkingGroup GM Jim Johnson and Cindy Patterson, Vice President for Enterprise Data for Verizon Wireless.
